WE NEED YOUR HELP TO FIND THE IDENTITY OF THIS JAZZ MUSICIAN
We are trying to find the identity of the busker whose incredible story you can hear on ‘R U Romantic?’
I captured it on a platform somewhere in the New York Subway in Oct 2011 using a little handheld stereo mic and minidisk recorder. He was playing his saxophone when I got onto the platform and I sat down on a nearby bench waiting for the train. My covert recording setup was rolling and I sat and listened. He stopped and came over and sat to my right on the bench. We shared a polite ’hi’. A woman arrived and sat on my left and they struck up a conversation. I was still recording as he tells his life story as a jazz musician growing up in the 50’s and meeting Elvis Presley, Jackie Wilson, going to Berklee in Boston, playing with Donnie Hathaway, Santana and Albert King. He says his name at the end but the incoming train was so loud I didn’t catch it (even after listening to it hundreds of times now) and the mic was up my sleeve and pointing away from them both, which is why it’s hard to hear everything they are saying.
