about

The final two tracks in a series of early CJ Mirra experiments, title track "Calm Clam" is an enticingly weird, crushingly bass-heavy original beat trip. Written for a Colour8 midnight beach party in Barcelona this is the final of Colour8 founders contribution to the label’s Murmuration series. It is accompanied by "R U Romantic?" a conversation recorded on the New York subway, captured on a minidisk recorder by CJ Mirra.

He explains, “I had my mic in my sleeve, capturing the sounds of the subway and this sax player stops playing just as I sit on a bench on the platform. He sits next to me on my right just as a woman sits next to me on my left. I’m still recording. They had this amazing conversation across me where he talks about his life, meeting Elvis Presley, playing with Carlos Santana and all these crazy interesting anecdotes. The exchange builds up to this magical point where they discuss the ‘romance’ in his playing and he asks her “Are you Romantic?” and she says “No but...you just guide us there”. I wrote a little piece to soundtrack it. Sadly the train comes along just as he says his name and the recording is all distorted so I still can’t make it out. If anyone knows who he is please let me know - I’ve been searching for years.”
